A bronze medallist in Guangzhou four years ago, Cheau Xuen put up a stunning display in the women’s nanquan and nandao all-round to amass 19.23 points and glory at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium.

She was only ranked third after scoring 9.62 points in the nandao, but a near-flawless performance in the nanquan gave her 9.61 points to storm past early leader and favourite Wei Hong of China.

Indonesia’s Juwita Niza Wasni won the silver with 19.19 points while Wei Hong fumbled with her landing in the nanquan and had to be satisfied with the bronze with a 19.15 total.

Diana Bong, the other Malaysian representative, ended up last in the 12-contestant field with 18.25 points after an error-strewn display.

The world No. 1 stormed back to beat Low Wee Wern 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 in a thrilling all-Malaysian women’s singles final at the Yeorumul Squash Courts yesterday to be the most successful Malaysian at the Asian Games.

It was a good day for Malaysian squash as it picked up three medals. Besides Nicol’s gold and the silver from Wee Wern, veteran Ong Beng Hee picked up a bronze as the beaten semi-finalist in the men’s singles.

It was the 24-year-old Wee Wern’s best-ever display against Nicol – and the closest of all their meetings.

It was a neck-and-neck battle in the first set, with Wee Wern nicking it at 11-9. With her vast experience, Nicol stormed back to win the second and third sets.

Wee Wern, however, refused to give up. She held the edge by leading 10-9 in the fourth set, but could not stop Nicol from forcing deuce and winning the next two points for the title.

  

Nicol victory makes Malaysia was standing 10 from 42 countries with 2 gold 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
